Located overlooking the on the Fosso of Matassa, the Scoppio of Acquasparta is a suggestive ghost village, abandoned during the 1950, whose name is from its position: the scopulus which defined for the latin gens a bumpy cliff or cliff.
Is an obligatory passage for the people which want enjoy the trails CAI of Martani mountains, the Scoppio has ancient origin, maybe more ancient than the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, built around the XI-XII century with the altar which preserves the symbol of the Order of the Knights of Solomon’s Temple and frescoes of Piermatteo Piergili dating from 1576.
Recently this place, rich with magic, has sharpened the director Wim Wenders, who has directed a piece of documentary dedicated to Pope Francesco.

A letter of purpose , to share a project for the development of the landscape and the community , who lives around Martani mountains, the “Carta dello Scoppio” , was signed from the municipalities of a territory around the province of Terni and Perugia on July 17, 2021.
The “Carta”, an informal text, but with a big symbolic worth, with which the municipality of Acquasparta, inside the contest of the project “InNaturalibus”, realized with the collaboration and the help of the Umbria Region – Department of Tourism, and in continuity with Le Terre dei Borghi Verdu, wanted to stimulate a process of sharing which include as much interested people , both public and private.
The hiking lodge of the Scoppio, just outside of the village, is now abandoned,but we hope that soon the administration of the municipality of Acquasparta, through this project, can give to us the surprise to reopen to the hikers and to the visitors this beauty of Le Terre dei Borghi Verdi.
