Not far from the Archeological Area of Carsulae, placed on the coast of Martani mountains, there is the village of Portaria, in the municipality of Acquasparta.

The history of the Castle of Portaria

Famous in the past likes Porcaria, probably for the pasture of pigs in the area, and part of Terre Arnolfe, is mentioned from the fonts for the first time in 1903 likes a present to the Abbey of Montecassino from one of the descendant of the Count Arnolfo

In May 1449, the castle received the court of Lucrezia Borgia, marching towards Spoleto for take the posses of the governorate – and every years, at the end of May, in the village is remembered this event with a beautiful Renaissance commemoration. 

The relationship with Spoleto, protected the village from the raids which in that period dystried the castles disputed between the people of Terni and Todi.

Monuments and churches

On top of the impressive Porta Romana, there is the coat of arms of the Cesi. This is in this place from when Gian Giacomo had this in exchange for the castle of Alviano, went to Pier Luigi Farnese.

And the tradition want that the same Lucrezia , used to go to Portaria, and lives in one of the building that today are facing on the beautiful Giuseppe Verdi Square, today, little architettonical  medieval jewellery where there is the Torre dell’Orologio, built in 1200 and then renovated in 1600 and under there is the suggestive renaissance well.

Along the streets of the village you can admire the Church of San Filippo and Giacomo of the XI century, and the exit door called Spoletina.
