Along the street which from Attigliano takes to Alviano, going through the municipality of Lugnano in Teverina, before the Thermae of Ramici you cross a fountain with beside a little shrine with the statue of the Madonna.
The Fountain of Sant’Eugenia of Attigliano, whose fountain in the past must be placed beside a rural church dedicated to the Saint, has ancient origin and a charm connected to a cult mixed between the Christianity and Paganism which was its fortune and misfortune.
Was in 1845 that Fr Filippo Costantini, wanting to rebuilding a church in the area of the “prodigious fountain of Sant’Eugenia” much venerated by the people of Attigliano, wrote a letter to the bishop of Amelia Mariano Bartocci Brasca to get the permise, having already found the money to do it.
The pastor, to validate the thesis of the ancient devotion attached an edict of 1758 of the past bishop Giacomo Filippo Consoli.
Unfortunately for the pastor, the edict told about an exist church ruined closed to the “fountain of Sant’Eugenia”, but also even about the fact that a lot of people used to go for drinks the water considered miraculous and also the puerpera used to do a ritual , considered inappropriate for the Christianity.
The pagan meaning of the whole, so alerted the bishop that he issued the edict with penalties, even excommunication.
Consequently , after almost 100 years, the bishop Mariano Bartocci Brasca denied the possibility of rebuilding the church.
According to the ritual, if to a one puerpera missed the milk , you needed to throw the bread to the fountain, then eat it and, after, placing itself like to drink the water, tell a formula dropping a certain number of fava beans from the chest due to the lower parts, to the waters. In this way the milk would come back.

One the flat trails that we can enjoy starting from the Castle of Attigliano is the Ring of the Water: a tourist trail long almost 7 kilometers which starts from Square Vittorio Emanuele II, passing through the countryside of Attigliano until to arrive in the fountain of Sant’Eugenia, and then headed the Tevere and , along the street along the river, go back to Attigliano.
