On the weekend leading up to April 25, Montecastrilli hosts Agricollina, the not-to-be-missed market exhibition of hillside agricultural machinery, animal husbandry and farmyard animals that has been filling the fair area with tens of thousands of people including farmers, curious adults and, most importantly, children for over 55 years!
The fair is spread over two large pavilions: the first, dominated by the buildings of the “Service Center,” is reserved for exhibitors of agricultural machinery and equipment; the second is reserved for agricultural products, those for care and breeding, and animal husbandry with a display of animals related to our rural tradition.
In the Service Center’s “Hall of Flavors,” more than 20 booths with products of local agricultural and food excellence complete, with the various outdoor food trucks an offer worth experiencing for the days of this spectacular fair.
Admission is free and open to the public, except for the first day of the event, which varies from year to year, is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at night.
The history of what is also known as the Tractor Festival was born in the early 1950s by the intuition of Don Antonio Serafini, parish priest of Montecastrilli who wanted to organize a special “thanksgiving festival” to bless the new agricultural machines.
From one year to the next, the blessing was preceded by a parade through the village streets preceded by an Image of Our Lady.
In the mid-1950s the event became a full-fledged exhibition with the name Festa del Trattore (Tractor Festival) to which was associated a tavern to enjoy typical dishes-now the tavern has become the Sagra della Chianina e del Suino Umbria.
It was in 1982 that, following the growth of the initiative, that the fair moved to where we still find it today, to an area that the municipality made available.
In 1986 the Municipality of Montecastrilli, the Chamber of Commerce of Terni, the Province of Terni became promoters of the establishment of a special Association for the management of the “Exhibition Market of agricultural machinery hilly and farmyard animals”, since 2000 the fair takes the name Agricollina.
The event is the only one of its kind in the Province of Terni; it is now attended by more than 200 exhibiting firms from all parts of Italy, and an estimated 30 to 40 thousand visitors attend in three days.
