To walk through the walls of Montecastrilli is to retrace the history of this village that can be read among the buildings, alleys and squares of the town that stands on a hill surrounded by an agricultural landscape of rare beauty.

A tour of the historic center of Montecastrilli

Leaving the car in one of the parking lots along Via Tuderte, the street where the modern nucleus of Montecastrilli was formed, behind the medieval keep that gives access to the center are: on the left the building of architecture of the ventennio designed by Bazzani called Infermeria – Ospedaletto – Monumento ai caduti; in the center the characteristic Asso di Coppe Fountain; on the right the walls of the complex of the Monastero delle Clarisse.

Climbing beyond the keep, in the square dedicated to the saint, is the entrance to Saint Clare’s Church a building finished construction in the 17th century that preserves some admirable works inside.

Continuing up Via Roma, which, at a certain point, becomes Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, we reach Piazza XX Settembre and San Nicolò’s Church the true spiritual center of Montecastrilli.

Opposite the church’s spectacular entrance stands the Porta Amerina complex also called “Torre del Belvedere” because of its characteristic terrace from which there is a beautiful view.

The tour through the alleys can continue: either along the walls in Via San NIcolò, or along the middle street (today Via Cavour) to discover the peculiar Teatro di San Giovanni. However, the two roads will meet, again, at Via Roma from where one can descend again to leave the center.

Just outside Montecastrilli, the small Church of San Lorenzo in Nifili built over the remains of a necropolis probably pertaining to a Roman rustic villa is very interesting and evocative.
