In the midst of the green of countryside of Montecastrilli, the Church of San Nicolò, with its characteristic bell tower, appears from afar with its elegance to those arriving from the Via Amerina.

Church of San Nicolò in Montecastrilli

Built, together with the castle, between the 10th and 11th centuries, it was renovated in the early 18th century with the construction of the transept – which transformed it into a Latin cross – and, finally, with the remaking of the facade and the relocation of the bell tower, revised during the second half of the 20th century.

Architectural structure

The entrance portal is identified with a lovely stone pronaos supported by columns resting on four exterior steps. The lunette depicts the Good Shepherd, and a sunburst rose window dominates the entire structure.

The layout of the church is Latin cross with a single nave on whose sides are four baroque-style chapels housing three altars; two additional chapels with altars open onto the transept.
