Placed in front of the XVIII century palace which guests the actually town hall, almost as a counterbalance to the secular power, there is the Church of San Francesco, which its part of what was the ancient convent of which today remains the cloyster, today used for art and artigianal exhibitions.

The history of the Church of San Francesco of San Gemini

Following the tradition, in 1213 the Count Pietro Capitoni, devoted and grateful for the miracle of the recovery of his wife, gave the his own garden, distance 50 metres from Porta Burgi (link al PDI), to the Saint of Assisi where Francesco left four of his brothers. 

After his death, between the 1235 and the 1241, the same Count built the Church of San Francesco in his honor with a ogival portal with bundles of columns and a wooden door and above the symbol of poverty (two arms crossed) and his noble coat of arms.

What see in the Church of San Francesco

The walls of the only aisle in gothic style with big arches preserves precious frescos which are date between the XV and the XVII century, with the Adorazione dei Magi, San Luigi, San Giovanni Battista, San Rocco, La Crocifissione, San Girolamo, San Leonardo, L’Incredulità di San Tommaso.   

Of great value is the wooden crox of the XV century.

Pietro De’ Bonanti and the Franciscan Protomartires

Tradition want that Pietro de’ Bonanti was born from one of the most noble families of San Gemini, and was certain important for him the meeting with Francesco which was received in the village in different times around 12313. 

Was so that, coming back from Calvi dell’Umbria Francesco, with a younger man call Berardo, Pietro decided to become one of the disciples and going in the Order of Friars Minor 

In 1219, during the “Gran Capitolo delle Suore” in Santa Maria degli Angeli,Francesco decided to send some of his brothers in different part of the world to preach. In this period Pietro was already a priest. 

Pietro and Berardo left for Spain occupied from the Saracen, with Ottone, Accursio and Adiuto and with Fra Vitale who died during the trip.  Preached in Coimbra, in Portugal, thwn in Siviglia and in Morocco where they died in January 16, 1220.
