Roman Domus

Abitazione

In the old town of San Gemini, inside a private habitation, there is one of the most ancient testimony: the splendid mosaics of ona Domus Romana dated I century BC – II century BC.

The Domus Romana of the Mosaics of San Gemini

Found casually around the 1950, what must to was an habitation of the roman village along the via Flaminia, there is preserved part of the atrium with the central “impluvium” with mosaics floors with black and white tiles.

Really interesting are the two adjacent rooms, made beautiful from two splendid geometric mosaics:

  • the mosaic in the little room is like a rug where in the center , between vine leaves and grape bunches, stands out a kantharos in whose handles are posed two little birds, all made in small tiles of different colors
  • the one in the big room is decorated with a theme built from a series of twelve arches in tiles of different colors: the theme reproduces , maybe, the facade of a porch or the scheme of an aqueduct , following an invalsa fashion of the decoration of the Pompeian houses, which is from  the first century of the empire.

The walls which divide the different rooms , preserves for an unlimited height, present in different spots , different colorations of plaster.

Together with the roman cisterns (or food storage compartments) of  via del Tribunale and to the presence of mausoleums , like the Grotta degli Zingari: are the vestige which testimony of the ancient origin of this splendid little city which today is present itself in its dress more exquisitely medieval.

Unfortunately the domus is in restoration, but soon we hope it can be visitable with also the cisterns.
