A short distance from one of the most evocative routes of the Amerini mountains – the path 746 Alta via dei Monti Amerini – in the territory of Santa Restituta stands one of the Patriarchs of the WWF well known as Acerone of  Santa Restituta, the Ancient Maple.

The Ancient Maple of the Amerini Trails

17 meters high and with an approximate age of 150-200 years this unique specimen of Acer Obtusatum, is one of the naturalistic pride of the Amerini Trails.

The maple usually grows in contexts of deciduous forests often in association with the Black Hornbeam and develops between 500 and 1300 meters above sea level.

These plants can reach 20 meters in height so the Ancient Maple presents common characteristics with the rest of  the specimen. Instead it is particular the fact that it has managed to survive so long in a context like that of the Amerini mountains in which the consistent action of civic cutting for the timber since it is coppice has prevented the development of trees of considerable size.

According to tradition, it seems that this maple has been preserved as it was used as a perch during the passage of the “columba palumbus palumbus” as suggested by the capitulation sign of an adaptation to the needs of hunting.

Today the Ancient Maple is a rare pearl of the territory and has become a destination for enthusiasts and hikers for the interesting path at a naturalistic level and you can get there through a small path that detaches from the 746 – Alta via dei monti amerini.
