The Church of Sant’Apollinare stands just after the entrance door of Toscolano and is part of the characteristic circuit of walls that distinguish the castle located near Mount Croce di Serra.
The first certain news about a Church of Sant’Apollinare that was united with the Church of San Giovanni on June 12, 1400 is reported in the “Alphabetical Handbook of the Chapels of Iuspatronato existing in the Diocese”, drawn up in 1867 by the episcopal chancellor Bonaventura Pianegiani.
As reported by an engraving on the entrance portal, the complex was rebuilt in the early seventeenth century.
The access to the church is guaranteed by some steps that lead to a small churchyard decorated in bricks walled with herringbone knife on which stands the door surmounted by a small rose window.
The interior has a single hall covered with lowered vaults developed in three bays, the last of which overlooks the presbytery that houses the main altar dedicated to Sant’Apollinare.
The other two altars are dedicated:
Noteworthy are the paintings of the seventeenth century of Andrea Polinori and Pietro Paolo Sensini.
In the counter-facade there is the wooden choir and a particular organ in olive wood.
