Located in a position overlooking the passage of the Via Amerina, the High Fortress – today a splendid historic residence – is one of the most valuable testimonies of military fortresses in defense of the so-called Byzantine Corridor of our territory.
Probably built on a previous stronghold, the High Fortress owes its current appearance to the Vici family of Stroncone who, in the complex of the various works carried out in the territory of Avigliano Umbro, started its construction 1482.
The Fortress and the Castle of Dunarobba – also named Fortress of Vici- they were also fortified to control the nearby Castle of Sismano property of Corsini princes of Florence.
With a square base with four semicircular towers at the corners, it is one of the few fortified buildings still perfectly preserved and present on our territory, and houses inside a chapel consecrated to the Blessed Antonio Vici, patron saint of Stroncone.
Such was the devotion to the Blessed that, until a few years ago, on February 7 – as happens in Stroncone, at the Convent of San Francesco – a solemn mass used to be celebrated during which the animals of the whole countryside were blessed.

Tradition wants that there is a gallery, the height of a man on horseback, which starts from Vici Palace in Avigliano Umbro and arrives, after 3.5 kilometers inside what appears to be an underground church just outside the perimeter of the fortress itself.
The existence of the church, used in a first monet as a warehouse, as well as by the Palli family owner of the building, is characterized by the frescoes with the coronation of the Virgin, St. Francis and the stigmata, and Saint Antony the Abbot which, removed from the same, today are visible inside the noble floor of the fortress itself.
