Porta da Capo, or Porta Ternana, in addition to being one of the most distinctive architectural elements of Calvi dell’Umbria, was the principal entrance to the highest part of the Castle.
Built in the medieval period as the entrance to the walls of the castle made by a continuous and closed circle of houses , it was restored in the last years of the XVI century and following, until the last century.
We know for sure that the two doors – even those at the end – were controlled by armed guards , especially during the feasts or the special events , when the influx of foreigners could have caused problems of public order.
At the middle of the XIII century , when probably was built the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, l the entrance to Via Sabina, today Via Roma, was controlled by this impressive structure which today give to us a memory of MIddle Age to the people who cross it and go inside the heart of the old town of Calvi dell’Umbria.
