A walk through the walls of Calvi dell’Umbria means live the essence of Southern Umbria : narrow streets and stairs which bring us between churches and little squares with views on the green valley of Tevere ; historical palaces, murales and the tour of the Museum of the Monastery of the Ursuline which preserves works of absolute greatness.
Parked the car in one of the parking lots near the old town, it is easy going inside the atmosphere of a little town rich in story and art.
What we suggested is to start from Porta da Capo ancient entrance of Calvi dell’Umbria with its battlements and the arch that leads us immediately inside the walls and, nearby, inside the Church of Santa Maria Assunta form the 1200.
Following the slope of Via Roma, the ancient Via Sabina, on the right Nicolini Palace, historical residence of 1500 belonged to one of the administrators of the powerful cardinal Altemps.
A little further on we are surprised by the first Panorama on the Tevere valley and the stairs that go down like hiding under the roofs of houses.
From here is suggest to hold your camera because, going forward is all a succession of view to photograph: from the Piazzetta Sora Medea which is reached by going down keeping to the right, up to the Vicolo degli Orti, passing through the square that frames the facade of Rosati Palace.
Those who have breath and desire to reach the lowest point of Via Roma, should reach even lower, where stood the Porta da Piedi and, above, the church of San Valentino, works no longer visible.
From here what was called Via Sabina, today SP 18, went toward those lands which gave it the name, in direction to the borders with Lazio.
We are on the Sentiero (Path) 641 – Calvi – San Benedetto – Montebuono which, starting from the old town of Calvi dell’Umbria takes to Montebuono.
It is worth making a little effort, but for those who decide alternately, from the Vicolo degli Orti you can go up via Roma and, at the signposted junction, take the stairs that lead to the square that houses the XVI century Church of the Santissima Trinità.
Keep going up, in addition to the entrance of Marchetti Palace you can reach Piazza San Berardo place where the tradition wants the birth of the franciscan protomartyr.
Passed Piazza Sant’Andrea you arrive to Ferrini Palace, the first heart of the monastic complex which hosts at the ground floor the Museum of the Monastery of the Ursuline, and from which you can enter to the museum tour which allow the visit to the kitchens and the storages of the monastery , in addition to the Monumental Crib preserved in the Oratory of Sant’Antonio Abate which, in Piazza Mazzini share the facade with the Church of Santa Brigida.
