Between the remains of the castle of Paragnano and Fort Caesar , probably along an ancient stretch of Via Amerina, hidden in a small forest the remains of a church (of St. Leonard?) indicate the former site of the Hospital and Market of the Four Chapels.
An “hospitable” is what we’ll call today an autogrill: it’s a place of refuge and refreshment for pilgrims who pass along Via Amerina and also a market around which an entire community lived (“a villa with 18 fires” as reported in the Liber Focolarium of the Commune of Todi in 1290).

The place is mentioned in two documents of 1112 as one of the buildings donated to the descendants of the Arnolfi family to the Abbey of Farfa (“the Hospital near the Market of the Four Chapels with all the appurtenances “…et hospitale juxta mercatum in IV capellis cura omnibus pertinentiis…”).
On June 1, 1208, the delegations of Todi and Amelia met there and a pledge of vassalage of a fifteen-pound candle was prescribed, which the Amerinians were to offer to the Todians during the feast of St. Fortunato.
Tradition tells of the presence of St. Francis “in the church that is called the Quattro Cappelle in the contado di Todi.”
A place as ancient as it is little known today.
Today remain the walls of the structure, made by fine workmanship, of the small church and around the remains of what was the settlement: in front the valley and the view of the heights of the Amerine mountains that are home to Santa Restituta and Toscolano.
