Placed around the important castle that dominates from its higher grandeur the Valley of Tevere, the city of Alviano, has, even now, its medieval town planning which makes it likes a real historical jewelry, artistic and natural. Knew for the castle and for the captain of fortune Bartolomeo of Alviano preserves inside of its territory, like a perfect combination between history and nature, part of 900 acres of the Alviano’s Oasis WWF.

Status Alviani

A small buffer state between Todi and Orvieto

We are in the Southern Umbria, not far from the Amerina road, surrounded by the green, which, inside the municipality of Alviano, becomes a real oasis.

The Castle was built during the medieval age, by the count Offredo following Ottone III, but we can’t exclude that it was populated in the past centuries.

During the XII century the Papal State gave the green light to the formation of the Status Alviani, a small buffer state between Todi and Orvieto.

Disputed from one and the other city, it was at the beginning of Renaissance that it became a real fortress , thanks to the Liviani family, who had the feud, and to Bartolomeo of Alviano, leader and captain of fortune, famous for his enterprises on the entire current nation.

Bartolomeo of Alviano

The history of Alviano is connected with the history of its principal most illustrious citizen: the leader Bartolomeo of Alviano, called Liviano.

Probably he was born in 1455 in the Alviano Fortress, even if from another theory talk about Todi, from Francesco and Isabella of Atti of Todi. He grew up in Alviano with his brothers Aloisio and Bernardino and he took up arms as a young man and soon he could demonstrate his worth inside the battlefield.

There are many enterprises which are attributed to the young leader, especially in the first decade of the sixteenth century, when he made war at the service of the Pontifical State.

He became one of the best leaders and protagonists of the Renaissance, becoming an important figure inside the military and political environment during Italia’s war with the Serenissima, thanks even to the Orsini’s family and the alliance with his cousin Niccolò.

He died in Bergamo in October 7, 1515, bring the name of Alviano the honors of all Italy.

Developing around the trapezoidal fortress with the round towers and the Renaissance garden, the village preserves even the Parish Church with three aisles, from the fifteenth century.

But is outside of Alviano that there is another jewel of the territory: on the homonymous lake, the natural Oasis.

From culture, to religion, through nature, many are the attractions that you can’t miss.

The Castle of Alviano

The Castle of Alviano hosts, in addition to the town hall, even an ethnographic museum of rural life which preserves typical instruments of the Alviano civilization, images and ancient techniques of agriculture and the museum of the captains of fortune.

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Alviano

Placed in one the most panoramic area of the village, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is one of the many point of interest to see in Alviano.

San Francesco and the “Cappella delle Rondini”

In the place of swallows’s miracle, where the tradition tells that the Saint, busy to predicate, asked the birds to be quiet, and then they obeyed, there is today the Cappella delle Rondini, one of the most panoramic places of the territory.

Case di Creta

Outside of the village, along the gullies which come down towards the Tevere Valley, the Case di Creta, where used to live the farmers up to 800, are the symbol of the rural life which had characterised the territories of this part of the south of Umbria.
