Surrounded by the forest of indigenous long-leaf oaks (Quercus Frainetto), from which it probably derives its name, Farnetta is a beautiful village that still retains the charm of the Middle Ages.
A hamlet of the municipality of Montecastrilli, Farnetta lies on a hill at an elevation of 385 meters above sea level.
A castle built in the early Middle Ages, it is attested in two documents from 1112 of the Regesto di Farfa, where Count Rapizone degli Arnolfi donated several churches, including one in Farnetta, and San Lorenzo in Nifili itself to the monastery of the Virgin Mary of Farfa.
From the 13th the territory came under the rule of Todi, and Farnetta became one of the frontier outposts with Amelia and Narni with the consequences and clashes that followed between the 13th and 15th centuries.
As with all the castles in the area, in 1577 Farnetta also affixed the coat of arms of the Todi eagle on the town gate, which was included in the plebiscite of Santa Vittorina now in the territory of Avigliano Umbro.

One of the village’s most characteristic structures is the San Nicolò’s Church, which from the 15th century replaced the now-disappeared San Silvestro’s Church. The structure has a single nave with two niches on either side: in the right altar a canvas depicting the Last Supper; in the left altar a Madonna of the Rosary with Child.
Outside the town there is the splendid Torre della Palombara, a watchtower structure from the late medieval period, and the Palazzo Nevi, that preserves Roman structures in its foundations.
Thanks to the verve of the inhabitants of Farnetta and its Pro Loco, several initiatives take place throughout the year.
Of particular gastronomic interest, certainly can be experienced between late May and early June when, during the festival for Santa Rita, it is possible to taste ciriole all’ortica at the Taverna del Curato.
