event
Much more than a religious celebration, the Feast of San Pancrazio is an event that involves the whole population: from the months preceding it, to the days ranging from 11 to 14 May where Calvi dell’Umbria goes back to the Middle Ages
If the first historical notice, which shows San Pancrazio as protect of Calvi, is from 1447, is of 1491 the first document which testifies to the celebrations on his honor, with the particular indication of the characters which substituted, for three days of the events, the authorities of the town.
An unique event which between culture, religious and tradition re-build in four days the story of the village.
The start of the feast is announced on May 11 by a herald on horseback.
The historical procession is thus formed according to a rigid ceremonial: the herald; the trumpeters and the drummers; the labar of the Municipality followed by a notary, a magistrate, a chancellor and a captain under the command of a group of armed men; then parade the authorities representing the four contrade, Fiamme, Castello, Croce e Drago.
For each contrada a gonfaloniere and a “gentleman”, a guy which represents the saint martyr roman Pancrazio.
The historical procession starts outside of Porta da Capo at the cross of the streets which lead to the other hamlets of Calvi.
L’incontro delle contrade – At the signal of the explosion of the third mortar, each group composed by the gonfaloniere, the gentleman and the palafrenieri start running and, once at the established point raise the rod – still without a banner – joining it to the others as a sign of concord.
Tavolate – The procession can then enter the streets of the village with obligatory stages and tables set by the families of the four gentlemen.
Dressing of the Banners – It is only in the evening that the banners of the four districts are entrusted by the Mayor to the gonfalonieri who become, since then, custodians.
Much more than a religious anniversary, with a feast for the Patron, Calvi celebrates three different traditions: that of the fourteen-year-old martyr venerated by the Church, that of the “signorno” that faces the dangers to save the entire community and that of the combative soldier defender of the civic borders of medieval tradition.
On the day of the anniversary of the martyrium of the Saint, after the Mass, the historical procession accompanies the first gentleman – that one of the contrada Fiamme – the gonfaloniere and the escort outside the walls where are the ruins of the “Collegiate church”. From there starts the long climb to the top of the mount San Pancrazio in the place where the Chapel is dedicated to the Saint.
Boundary reconnaissance – On the mountain, where a wall indicates the territorial division between Calvi and Poggio di Otricoli, there is a re-enactment of the border reconnaissance by the municipalities involved, based on an event in 1456.
To reiterate the domination of Calvi on the mountain, after mass, the gentleman will gallop and three times the tour of the Chapel. Going down he will repeat again the three turns around the ruins of the windmill that once marked the border between the town and the mountain.
Battalion – On their return to Piazza Mazzini the four young men will repeat the gallop around the four banners in the so-called battalion.
The day after is the day of the arm : when, after the mass, the historical procession accompanies to the narrow streets the relics of the Arm of San Pancrazio : a silver arm which contains a relics procured by Carlo Simoncelli in the catacombs of the Cathedral of Aurelia and donated in 1646 to the community.
The festival closes on May 14 with the day of accounts, when the banners are returned to the municipal authorities who will guard them until the following year.
